The imagery and symbolism of zombies have undergone a profound transformation over centuries, transcending local folklore to become a pervasive element of global popular culture. Historically rooted in Haitian Vodou traditions, the modern understanding of zombies has been shaped by literary, cinematic, and digital influences, reflecting societal anxieties, technological advances, and cultural narratives.
Historical Roots: Haitian Folklore and Early Beliefs
The concept of zombies first emerged from Haitian Vodou beliefs, where the undead represented a return from the afterlife, often under the control of a sorcerer or bokor. These stories shaped early perceptions of zombies as beings devoid of will, embodying fears about death, control, and identity. Anthropologists such as Wade Davis have documented these traditions, emphasizing their spiritual and social significance within Haitian communities.
The Rise of Zombies in Western Popular Culture
It wasn’t until the 20th century that zombies crossed into Western consciousness, primarily through films like White Zombie (1932) and novels such as William Seabrook’s Jungle Ways. The genre gained momentum with George A. Romero’s seminal 1968 film Night of the Living Dead, which redefined zombies as relentless, terrifying hordes driven by insatiable hunger. This portrayal laid the groundwork for countless adaptations, video games, and comic books, cementing zombies as symbols of societal collapse and consumerism.
